2024 General Election
Members Toolkit From Later Life Ambitions

LLA-2020-logo-high-res-e1578318108869.jpg

Later Life Ambitions is determined to ensure that the voice of people in later life is heard during the General Election. Our manifesto lays out our vision for a better deal for the 11 million people in later life throughout the UK. From an Older People’s Commissioner to a National Social Care Service, maintaining the Triple Lock State Pension to delivering a National Housing Strategy, we are focused on issues that impact older people the most. We require bold and forward-looking action from our political leaders to address the challenges that we will all face in the future.

By 2030, there will be almost 13 million people in later life. The issues we face today will also impact on future generations unless today’s policymakers are willing to confront the challenges now. We need your help to get this message to candidates across the UK and make sure our manifesto is supported and understood.

This user friendly toolkit has been created to help supporters communicate with their local candidates. It includes guidance on how to find out who your local candidates are, how to contact them and tips on what to say.

Higher Share of Pensioners Pay Income Tax Than Working People...

11th June 2024

The Telegraph reports that, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), the amount of pensioners who are paying income tax has risen above working people for the first time.

65% of older Brits now pay tax on their income, up from 48% in 2010. According to the publication, this rise has been caused by real terms cuts to the tax-free allowance for pensioners. The income tax threshold was frozen at £12,570 in April 2022, meaning a pensioner needs only to earn £1,067.60 above the state pension a year to start paying tax.

Wills - Linder Myers Closure

27th March 2024

Members may be aware of the closure of Linder Myers law firm. Affinity Resolutions have provided the following useful guidance.

If you have made a Will with Linder Myers and are worried about how this will affect you:

1. Check whether the Will you have is a copy, or the original. If you are holding an original, then provided this is still up to date, there is nothing you need to do.

2. If you are holding a copy, you may be contacted by another legal firm asking you to make an appointment with them to review your Will. You are under no obligation to use this firm, but if you are contacted, this is an opportunity for you to ask them to send your original Will.

3. If you are not contacted by another law firm and you have concerns as to the whereabouts of your original Will, it may be easier to make a new Will.

4. Whatever the circumstances, if you decide to make a new Will, you can use any solicitor of your choosing or contact Harvey Howell solicitors on 0330 175 9959 whose details appear in the March 24 NFOP magazine.

Travel Insurance Update From P J Hayman

5th February 2024

As we continue to navigate beyond the pandemic, the landscape of the insurance industry remains in a constant state of transformation with some Insurers choosing to withdraw completely from the market. We are therefore witnessing a strengthening of premiums across the insurance sector as a result.

We recognise that facing a premium increase can be challenging and we appreciate your understanding as we explain the factors behind this adjustment.

Premium adjustments stem from a variety of factors including claims performance and the inflationary increase of overseas medical costs. This year has witnessed a significant rise in submitted claims with a notable number incurring substantial costs. The result of this has meant for every £1 in premium received by the Insurer, £1.45 has been paid out in claims.

As the confidence in and desire to travel continues to escalate, we believe that despite this increase, the policy continues to offer great value for money with the unique Fit To Travel warranty remaining a positive aspect.

Our Tree For Life

We are delighted that a tree has been planted in our name as part of the Trees For Life rewilding charity scheme in Scotland.

As a new client of Adecco, one of the worlds largest HR and staffing providers, NFOP had a tree planted in the Caledonian Forest - Scottish Highlands in August 23 as part of the Adecco sustainability pledge and partnership with Trees For Life.

Trees for Life plants in remote areas best suited to help the return of the Caledonian Forest, such as on their conservation estate, Dundreggan, near Loch Ness, and Glen Affric National Nature Reserve. Our tree will begin as a sapling grown from locally collected seed and will be one of a number of species planted such as Scots pine, Willow, Birch, Rowan, Hazel, Holly and Bird Cherry. Our sapling will help transform open hillsides into healthy young woodland able to support the local ecosystem and wildlife. Once the trees reach maturity, natural regeneration will go on to create wild forests that will be enjoyed by and help sustain generations to come.

York Group Step Back In Time...

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be poor in Victorian England, before the days of a welfare system? Those without the means to support themselves often ended up in the workhouse or even prison.

The York 354 group recently paid a visit to the Ripon Museums to discover for themselves the fascinating history and stories of just how grim Victorian life in Yorkshire and beyond could be. Photo courtesy of Shelagh Kenny.
